Kenting National Park was Taiwan's first national park. In 1977, forKenting's tree the purpose of alleviating environmental damage caused by farming and building in Kenting area, late president (then premier) Chiang Jing-Guo instructed that "preservation of natural resources and the ecosystem must be taken into consideration during construction practices; plans should be made to establish a national park in Kenting area".

In 1979, under authorization of the Ministry of the Interior, National Taiwan University conducted a survey on Kenting's ecological resources, including its coasts, topography, geology, wildlife, and plants. Taiwan Housing and Urban Development Bureau later drew


   

up the Kenting National Park Project according to the results of the survey and the National Parks Law. The project came into effect on September 1, 1982, and Kenting National Park Headquarters was established on January 1, 1984.
