Topography

The beautiful landscape boasted by Kenting National Park is divided into two parts by the long and narrow Hengchun Longitudinal Valley Plain that extends from north to south. With coral sea cliffs teemed with fringing reefs along the west coast, the park features a large number of mountains in the north, and coral tablelands and foothills in the south. The plain, which is formed by fault valleys, has a vast lake called Longlyuantan, together with rising coral tablelands and limestone caves to the east. The east side of the coral tablelands features unique sand rivers and sand waterfalls formed by the combined effects of winds and rivers, as well as coral cliffs, sunken caves and stalactites. As a result, the park is gifted with diverse topography and geology, which can be divided into the following categories:

Kenting's sea

Sand seashores: scattered along coastal areas of Baisha, Nanwan, Kenting, Siaowan, Shadao and Fongchueisha.
Fringing reef shores: scattered in the west coast and along the coastal areas of Eluanbi.
Rock seashores: scattered in the east coast to the north of Jialeshuei, with the rock seashore of Jialeshuei being the most well known.
Limestone tableland cliffs: scattered on top of coastal fringing reefs in areas such as Dapingding, Guanshanyan, Maobitou, Sheding, Kenting Forest Park and Eluanbi Tableland.
Isolated mountains: including mountains formed by rocks from other places on top of Kenting's strata such as Menmaluoshan, Dashanmushan, Dajianshihshan, Siaojianshihshan and Cingwashih.
Slumping cliffs: scattered along the east coast in Maobitou and from Eluanbi to Fongchueisha.
River mouths: including the estuaries of the Baoli and the Gangkou Rivers.
Rivers and lakes: including the Gangkou River and Longlyuantan.
Intermontane basins: scattered in the surrounding areas of Nanrenshan.
The rich topography of Kenting National Park reflects the active movements of earth's crust for millions of years, which have caused the Hengchun peninsula to sink, rise, crumple and collapse, making it the best classroom for the study of topography and geology.
