Promulgated in 1972, Taiwan's "National Parks Law" provides regulations concerning the conservation of natural resources. According to the National Parks Law, national parks are established "to protect the unique landscape, wildlife, and cultural heritage of the country, and to serve as resources for education, recreation, and research." National Parks must meet the following criteria:
Contain scenery, landform, features, fossils, or wild plant or animal species that have survived and evolved naturally without artificial breeding.
Contain inspiring prehistoric relics or historic sites of educational value worthy of long-term preservation by the state.
Contain unique scenery of a recreational nature that is enjoyable and convenient to the public.
